Carpet Beetles or Bed Bugs, know the difference
Portland OR - Beaverton OR - Lake Oswego OR - Vancouver WA
If you’ve spotted a tiny insect in your bedroom or on your walls, we understand you may be concerned, especially with the prevalence of bed bugs. However, more often than not, those tiny bugs turn out to be carpet beetles. Both pests can leave you with itchy, irritated skin but carpet beetles don’t bite like bed bugs do. It’s the fuzzy hairs on the larvae bodies that irritates your skin.
So how do you differentiate the two? Keep reading to learn.

Identifying Carpet Beetles
It’s very common for people to mistake carpet beetles for bed bugs, which is why it’s so important to learn how to tell them apart. Carpet beetles are oval-shaped and have scales on the backs of their bodies that are often yellow-brown or black. Bed bugs on-the-other-hand are oval-shaped with reddish-brown bodies. They closely resemble apple seeds. A bigger difference between carpet beetles and bed bugs is their larvae appearance. Carpet beetle larvae look like tiny fuzzy caterpillars whereas bed bug larvae look like tiny worms.
Differences Between Bed Bugs and Carpet Beetles
Both bed bugs and carpet beetles breed fast and are both known to remain hidden before making their presence known. The main differences between these two pests are their habits and behaviors.
- Bed bugs are nocturnal and come out to feed on their host when asleep
- Bed bugs bite and feed on blood
- Carpet beetles feed on fabrics like carpet, wool, and other fabrics
- It can be hard to see the signs of carpet beetles, which gain access through openings outside of your property
