In the summer time, we love our decks and outdoor spaces. They are an extension of our homes. When the winter hits, the umbrellas come down, the patio furniture and barbecues get covered and we prepare for the coming rains. Its the exact same things that pests do, specifically rodents, small wildlife and carpenter ants. Our covered areas (and the crawlspaces underneath become their shelters. When the rains break for a few days, I always have my team pay extra attention to outside decks and porches to look for signs of pest infestation. This is something you can do too. When the rains break, check your decks, check underneath tarps and coverings, check the grounds surrounding and undeneath for carpenter ants or signs of rodent activity. Catching a problem early on can spare you a damage report months later when carpenter ants have colonized and rodents (mice, rats, raccoons, squirrels) have reproduced.
A few minutes of your time can prevent bigger problems down the road. In the meantime, enjoy the sunshine! Winter will be over soon.
