German Cockroaches in the Pacific Northwest

German cockroaches are a worldwide pest that is considered to be the most prevalent home-invading species. These insects are drawn to warm and humid environments, though they rely completely on human habitats to survive. German cockroaches are known to invade homes, supermarkets, factories, and restaurants, though even cruise ships or naval vessels can become heavily infested. Since these pests prefer to stay where there is constant food and water, they are most likely to stay near kitchens or bathrooms. Once a suitable habitat is selected, an infestation can spread extremely quickly as just one female can lead to 30,000 new cockroaches in a single year.

German Cockroach Habitat

German cockroaches prefer to reside in warm and damp areas with ample access to food, which makes kitchens and bathrooms the perfect habitat. If an infestation is not caught early, German cockroaches can spread rapidly in search of more food, water, and shelter. These insects often hide in dark spaces such as cabinets, drawers, underneath sinks, and inside electrical equipment. Since these roaches are also drawn to warmth, they may be drawn to heat-producing appliances such as coffee makers, dishwashers, or microwaves.

German Cockroach Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

Though German cockroaches are not known to bite humans, they can spread disease and lead to many other dangerous health consequences. During an infestation, German cockroaches will leave their feces and skins all around the home. Without quick and proper treatment, these can lead to skin rashes, asthma attacks, and serious illnesses. An outbreak of cockroaches can also impact psychological well-being, even resulting in post-traumatic stress disorder or phobias. If you suspect German cockroaches are invading your home, it’s important to call a professional cockroach exterminator as soon as possible.
